Marine Education Centre – Ataúro Island

As part of the Blue Economy agenda, the Government will establish a Marine Education Centre on Ataúro Island. This nationally significant project represents a major investment in marine knowledge, conservation, and community development.

Located within one of the most biodiverse reef systems in the world, the Centre will become a hub for education, marine tourism, and nature-based development. It will connect local communities, students, researchers, and visitors with the extraordinary marine life found in Timor-Leste’s waters.

“The Marine Education Centre will tell the story of Timor-Leste’s rich marine biodiversity and the responsibility of each of us to conserve it for future generations. Beyond education, the Centre will provide a foundation for the diversification of our economy and the promotion of nature positive development for our country.”

— Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão

The Centre will showcase Timor-Leste’s marine ecosystems — from vibrant coral reefs to the deep cultural and ecological ties between the Timorese people and the sea. It will encourage a new generation to value and protect the ocean, while creating sustainable opportunities in conservation, science, and ecotourism.

More than a place of learning, the Centre will help lay the foundation for sustainable development and economic diversification — a national priority. It will serve as a gateway to marine-based employment, a platform for international collaboration, and a focal point for nature-positive growth.

The design of the Centre will reflect the cultural identity of Ataúro and Timor-Leste. Drawing on traditional weaving, fishing practices, and Tais, it will use sustainable, locally sourced materials and traditional construction techniques to harmonise with the island’s natural setting.

The Marine Education Centre will be a place to learn, explore, and affirm our shared duty to protect the ocean for current and future generations.
