The Western coastline of Atauro is slightly further to get to, with barely any tourism development aside from a couple of homestays. Dive operators reach the area either via day trips from Beloi or Dili. This however makes it a gem of a location to dive on, largely untouched and typically with no other dive groups in sight.

The sites here are mainly sheer vertical wall dives that drop from 4-5 meters straight to deep ledges 60-80 meters down, after which it continues even deeper. Still, one does not need to dive to great depths to enjoy the spectacular untouched reefs. The entire coastline is pretty much diveable due to the long stretches of reef, but highlights include dive sites such as Atecru, Adara, Iliana, and Doro due to the different characteristics of their topographies. Expect fast drift dives when diving here during spring tides or between tidal changes, but getting calm easy dives is also possible when planned right.

A number of the sites here are designated ‘Tara Bandu’ sections, or Locally Managed Marine Protected Areas’ and will require the collection of a small fee to pay to the local community custodians. Also worth to note that between the months of January to April the western coast of Atauro is very exposed to strong westerly winds and thus does not make for condusive diving.
