Far and away, the greatest threat to the ocean, and thus to ourselves, is ignorance.”

“My Sea, My Timor” Children’s Book Launch
On World Ocean Day, 8 June 2024, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão officially launched the children’s book ‘My Sea, My Timor’, as part of the Ha’u-nia Tasi, Ha’u-nia Timor national campaign.
In April 2025, the Ministry of Education adopted the book into the national education curriculum.
Primary school students in Grades 3 and 4 across all 13 municipalities and the RAEOA (Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno) will now learn about Timor-Leste’s Blue Economy and the importance of protecting the ocean for future generations.
A total of 120,000 copies were printed by the National Printing Centre of the Ministry of Education and are being distributed to schools, reaching around 40,000 primary school students.
In addition, more than 3,000 hardcover editions of the book — published in Tetum, Portuguese, and English — have been distributed to over 1,000 primary schools, libraries, mobile library services, and community learning centres, ensuring wide access for children across the country.
