Jaco Island

Jaco Island, off the eastern tip of the coast of Timor-Leste, is a hidden paradise, known to locals and a few others only, is famous for its pristine white sand beaches, devoid of crowds, and of guaranteed tranquillity, beauty and mysterious allure.

A sacred island for the local population, no one is allowed to overnight in the island so as to not disturb the ancestral spirits. Only the wild deer roam the island. It is said under its waters is where turtles shells are sourced for the mystical bracelets and rings that adorn the arms, wrists, and fingers of many Timorese.

Encircled by vibrant coral reefs, Jaco Island is an underwater wonderland that beckons snorkelers and divers for an unforgettable experience. Its lush, tropical vegetation provides a sanctuary for biodiversity, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.

Jaco Island is an unrivalled tourism destination and also key for Timor-Leste’s Blue Economy. The small island represents an opportunity for sustainable tourism that aligns with Timor-Leste’s commitment to environmental conservation and as a model for responsible tourism development that implements eco-friendly initiatives, including low-impact accommodation, guided tours emphasizing environmental education, and community cultural engagement programs. Jaco Island has the potential to become a destination that harmonizes economic interests with cultural and ecological preservation.
